If the Tigers wanted to start the youth movement and make cap room then why are they signing Valverde for $14 million when they could give Zumaya or Ryan Perry a shot? Valverde one of the best in the league and will help this team but it doesn't make sense.
I don't know if I would want Zumaya as our closer. If he's had trouble in pressure situations in the 7th and 8th innings, I don't think he's miraculously going to be better in the 9th. Plus, he has trouble staying healthy (i.e. Guitar Hero). Giving Perry a shot would've been interesting though.
But yeah, 14 million for Valverde is a strange move if they're trying to make cap room right now. Also, now it looks like Rodney must have just not wanted to re-sign with Detroit since Valverde's actually going to be making more than him.
