Reactions to the Leaked New MSU Spartans Logo

As a Spartan Alumn, I'm very unhappy with this new proposed logo and it appears that the overwhelming response is the same as mine. It looks as though it was drawn by a five year old. This is a slap in the face to tradition and Nike needs to be stopped. Things like this are cool for one time use, like the Nike Pro Combat jerseys worn this season, but no more then that. The Re-Branding that Nike did with Oregon is the laughing stock of NCAA football and hopefully fan and alumni reactions will prevent this from happening to MSU.

Mr. Hollis:
As a (current student at MSU/MSU graduate/lifelong fan of Michigan State) I have to say upfront that I disagree with your decision to consider updating the Spartan helmet logo along with the implied unveiling of further changes to MSU's athletic logos. Please know that as a Spartan I take pride in our tradition and do not support changing how our university is represented at the most basic level.

Thank you for you time.

Sincerely,
YOUR NAME

This is what I sent to the Athletic Director earlier today:

Dear Athletic Director Hollis,

I am very disappointed about the recent decision to change the classic Michigan State Spartan logo to a new design. In my opinion, the new logo is not an improvement upon the old logo and it should not be adopted. I understand that the university may have made a deal with Nike to undertake a "rebranding" effort, but this does not meant the logo should change. In recent years, college football teams such as Ohio State, Florida State, and TCU have executed such rebranding efforts to their uniforms without drastically altering their existing logos or the classic feel of their traditional uniforms.

I would urge you not to alter the classic Spartan logo. Every alumni I've discussed this with is unequivocally opposed to the new logo. Alter MSU's team uniforms if you must, but please allow our athletic teams to retain the classic logo that MSU students, alumni, and fans have grown to love. Also, I have heard some rumors that the classic MSU Green may be altered as well. I do not know if this rumor can be substantiated but I am opposed to this as well, as would the majority of MSU fans.

I would urge you to carefully consider the negative effect this logo change will have on all those who root for MSU with all our hearts. Please do not ruin a cherished tradition by introducing a new logo that appears to be more "modern." Please listen to the numerous students, alumni, and fans, such as myself, that are leading this outcry. Thank you for your time. GO GREEN!

Sincerely,

Jared Natzke
